The Economic Survey of Maharashtra for 2010-11 says that while the Mumbai board has constructed 8,614 houses and Konkan built 1,574, Pune board could construct only 329 dwellings during the year, which is the lowest in the state.
Rajendra Nimbalkar, chief executive officer of MHADA, Pune, said, "The policy on granting 2.5 FSI has not been finalised for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. We had to put our housing project plans on hold since the current One FSI policy reduces our potential to build. A 2.5 FSI has been approved for all other boards except ours. We have been expecting a nod for the last two years," Nimbalkar said.
The government's plan to allot additional FSI is primarily aimed at creating new affordable houses for all. Presently, MAHADA colonies get one FSI. For instance, a plot measuring 1,000 square foot can have a construction area of 1,000 square feet only. As per the new norm, MAHADA colonies will have 2.5 FSI (which means 2.5 times construction of the land area available).
