Economic survey gives MSRTC points to mull

According to the survey, which compares the operational statistics for 2008-09 and 2009-10, the decrease in crew productivity and increase in staff ratio (during 2009-10) as compared to the previous year are "points of concern". The survey states that between 2008-09 and 2009-10, the number of passengers travelling per day had reduced by around 37,000. The number of buses owned by MSRTC increased marginally from 15,695 (in 2008-09), to 15,950 in (2009-10). However despite the decrease in the number of buses, the average effective kilometres operated per day increased from 49.67 lakh to 50.61 lakh.

MSRTC chairman Sudhakar Paricharak said the number of passengers showed a decrease because the city bus transport service provided by the corporation for Nagpur city was withdrawn in 2009-10. Despite the decrease in number of passengers in Nagpur city, there was a substantial increase in number of passengers from other rural and urban areas. Paricharak said the corporation has been taking special efforts to attract passengers. He said the MSRTC had earned a profit of Rs 71 crore in 2009-10, adding that the corporation has given increased salaries and other incentives to its employees, because of which the financial burden has increased by Rs 500 crore this year.
